We have a clear vision for learning and development. We want to inspire all our colleagues to learn and have the skills they need to be their very best, now and in the future.
We’re incredibly proud of our Tesco Academies in the UK and Korea. They’re part of our commitment to world-class learning and development.
We’re innovating to provide learning and development that really makes what matters to colleagues better. We combine traditional training with online and app-based learning.
The “Academy Online” virtual academy lets colleagues build skills and access inspiring training right across the Tesco Group, wherever they are and whatever they do.
Our recently launched “Academy on the Go” mobile learning app delivers excellent, bite-sized training whenever and wherever colleagues need it.
Our Group Management Programme is just one example of our excellent development programmes. We work with some of our most promising colleagues in the early stages of their careers to give them stretching learning experiences right across the business.
Wherever we’re based, we want to have a positive impact. So for the past ten years we’ve made sure that when we create jobs, they go to the local people who need them most. It’s part of our commitment to providing thousands of jobs in some of the UK’s most deprived areas.
In 2000, we developed an initiative called the Regeneration Partnership. This guarantees that at least 10% of all jobs created by a new store or Distribution Centre will go to the local long-term unemployed.
That same year, the first Regeneration Partnership store opened in Leeds. Since then, a further 53 stores have opened, creating more than 6,500 of these jobs. And we’ve now opened our first Regeneration Partnership in a Distribution Centre (Dagenham), Dotcom Centre (Erith) and smaller convenience store (Liverpool Road Express).
To do this we ‘ve partnered with Jobcentre Plus, local Councils and Training Providers. Jobcentre Plus selects candidates who’ve been unemployed for over 6 months. They’re given help and support with practice sessions before the interview and, if they’re successful, attend an 8 week pre-employment training course. This doesn’t just focus on knowledge, but also the so-called ‘soft skills’ of motivation, confidence, teamwork, time-keeping and preparation for work experience.
Once they’ve successfully completed the course, they join their local teams as fully trained Tesco colleagues.
